Ye Olde Spanish charm at 'La Botija' (October 2009)
Published: Monday, 05 October 2009 07:58

The stylish interior of 'La Botija'.

When the new owners  purchased 'Ye Olde Leather Bottle' one of the first things they decided was to preserve the character of this historic building in Warlingham Green.  The outside still bears its original name alongside its new name, 'La Botija' (Spanish for 'The Bottle').  Inside, the careful preservation of the original features  compliments the traditional northern Spanish-style decor that is the setting for this exciting new nightspot.

When I visited La Botija last month, the first thing I noticed was the buzzy atmosphere.  It was a Thursday evening and the restaurant was full.   There was plenty to take in, from the upturned barrels for tables and the Jamon Serrano hams hanging above the bar in true  Andalucian style.  The menu offers a wide range of hot and cold Tapas as well as Paella Mixta with chicken and shellfish and Paella Vegetariana for non-meat eaters. The Tapas dishes that my partner Keith and I selected were all beautifully cooked and presented and wonderful to eat.

Sergio carves wafer-thin slices of Jamon Serrano ham, a Spanish national delicacy.

We selected the Gambas tres Colores, pan fried prawns with mushrooms and avocado cooked in white wine, garlic and cream sauce; Arroz Empedrado, traditional Spanish rice with chicken and chorizo; Raxo, strips of pork tenderloin cooked with onions, garlic, parsley, paprika and white wine and Championes Rellanos, deep fried mushrooms in batter stuffed with spinach and cheese bechamel sauce.  Accompanied by a jug of Sangria, the Spanish dining experience was complete!

La Botija offers a wide range of good quality wines, but is particularly proud of its 'Magnificent 7' prestige wines for extra special occasions.  A separate booklet explains all about the production process of these outstanding wines - ask owner, Sergio, for more information.

'La Botija Tapas Bar and Restaurant', 2 The Green, Warlingham CR6 9NA.  Telephone: 01883 620419.
