Elderly Warlingham residents demonstrated that it is never too late to learn a new skill, when they took part in an IT training session at Uplands sheltered accommodation in Warlingham on Tuesday, 4th January. Two computer workstations have been installed at Uplands, thanks to a grant obtained by Tandridge District Council from Get Digital, a government project to fund computer equipment and digital skills training for older people in England living in sheltered accommodation. The £4,000 grant paid for the installation of the workstations as well as one to one training covering the basic aspects of computer and internet use. Additional training will cover more advanced IT skills, such as using digital cameras and games consoles. The Uplands Scheme Co-ordinator, Steve Baker, said: "The residents have been looking forward to learning how to use the new IT equipment. We would like to involve members of local groups such as bowls clubs in the scheme and invite schoolchildren in to provide links across the generations." Olga Salenius, Community Support Manager for Tandridge District Council said: "The sessions are designed to give the residents a gentle introduction to computer skills. We are hoping there will be more money available from February to enable us to introduce the service in other areas of Tandridge."
