The response to Caterham Rotary Club’s recent Young Photographer competition has exceeded all expectations. 

Rotarian Marianne Woods commented, “In this, the first year, I have been astounded by the quality and vision of the entrants who have ranged from 4-18 years of age. A testament to the abilities of our young people today.”

Over 170 photographic entries were received from 60 young people depicting the theme ‘Springtime in Surrey’. There were three age entry categories, 11 and under (Junior), 12 to 16 (Intermediate) and Under 19 (Senior) with a £100 prize and certificate award to each winner.

The winners were:

Senior: “Ladybird on flower” Vicky Pearce

Intermediate: “Mating frogs” Miles Findlay

Junior: “Tree in Rape field” William Baker

There were cash prizes for runners up and Highly Commended certificates awarded to a number of promising entries.

The judges were Ying Shi the owner of Caterham Photography and sponsor of the event, Colin England from Caterham U3A Photography Group and Julia Church Editor of The Caterham Independent.

An exhibition of many of the photographs has been set up in the windows of a vacant shop in Church Walk Caterham and the manager Lyne Boyd said “We were delighted to allow Caterham Rotary Club to set up a display for the next few weeks show casing the amazing young photographic talents in this area.”
