On Saturday 24th September the Club held a Quiz Night in the White Hart Barn in Godstone. The hall was packed with teams all eager to enjoy the evening and to do their best to win the contest. Lion Tony Skilbeck and wife Brenda put the questions together, delivered them to the gathering and then marked them. There was a break about half way through when a supper of cottage pie was served to all. The pies had been made by Lions or their partners – and they were all jolly good and went down well. In spite of keen competition The Inklings proved the winners for a second year running. It was not only a successful evening in terms of numbers and the lovely supper but also a good fundraiser. About £800 was raised for deserving local causes. In September the Club held its Skittles evening at the British Legion in Limpsfield. The competition is held there every year and has always proved a really great place to hold it as the alley is great, not too far from the bar and the supper that is served is always delicious and plentiful. This year the Club was joined by five members of Bromley Lions but it was a team from COGS that won. The winner of COGS award for the best maths student has been awarded to Kerem Bilgeis of Oxted School. The award was set up some years ago in memory of one of our members, Arthur Sambles who had a passion for maths. The award is a book token to the value of £100. It was presented to Kerem by Past Club President Lion Lesley Day and Lion David Annenberg and was presented to him just before he left for Bath University. This year the Christmas Float will be doing its usual rounds of the district. On 3rd and 4th December it will be at Morrison’s in Oxted from 10am-4pm, on Monday 5th it will tour Bletchingley, Wednesday 7th it is in Godstone North 5.30 -8.30pm, Thursday 8th Caterham Village at 5.30-8pm, Saturday and Sunday 10th and 11th at Clacket Lane Services West from 10-4pm. Monday 12th it is in South Godstone west of the A22 from 6.45-8pm and on the east side on 14th from 5.30-7.45pm. Thursday 16th it is in Godstone south of A25 from 5.30-8.30pm and on Saturday and Sunday the 17th and 18th it will be at Tesco in Caterham from 10am-4pm. For those who make think it useful the Lions facilitate a service called Message in a Bottle or MIAB. Essentially it is a plastic bottle that is kept on the inside of the door of a fridge. In it is some paperwork that when filled in give details of health and medication being taken by someone in the house. It means that if the Emergency Services are called at any time they can make what might be lifesaving decisions by referring to the information in the bottle. The Emergency Services are trained to look, in the refrigerator door. A green cross sticker is placed on the inside of the main door, or where it is considered would be most obvious and another sticker on the door of the fridge. The information provided should include where medication is kept and details of the latest prescription, contact details, major medical conditions, personal doctor and anything considered necessary that would need attention in those first critical moments. For places where you can find the MIAB bottles or for further information contact Tony Skilbeck on 01883 335945 |
