Caterham businesses are bracing themselves for a flurry of Christmas trade this December, which will be given a boost by the purchase of a number of artificial snow machines. It is anticipated the novel attraction will prove a hit with shoppers who will invite friends and family to the town to join in the fun.
"The idea came from a news bulletin I saw on a similar scheme that has been running in Hythe in Sussex," explained Chris Windridge, Chairman of the Caterham Community Partnership. "The programme told how footfall in their shopping centre increased and most shops reported a significant increase in sales. The snow created a real buzz and Christmassy feel amongst shoppers."
The machines are being funded by local shops, Rotary, Round Table and some local individuals. They will be switched on between 11am and 3pm on Saturday the 5th, 12th and 19th December. The snow will fall in the area near to The Square and parts of Godstone Road, Croydon Road, Station Avenue and Church Walk.
