On Monday, 31st January, the Solicitor General, Edward Garnier QC and Jonathan Djanogly, the Legal Aid Minister, paid a visit to the Elizabeth House Medical Practice (EHMP) in Limpsfield Road, Warlingham to observe the new Free Advice and Mediation Surgery. Local solicitor, June Venters QC and Dr Hinkes and Dr Cohen from EHMP founded the surgery after they decided there was scope for looking at how their different vocations could work together for the good of the local community. They explained to the visitors that referrals between the legal and medical professions can enhance the services provided and reduce the burden often placed on the medical profession from treating the physical symptoms caused by family and relationship breakdowns. They added that it is often the GPs who first hear about the problems divorce causes which is why the link up with mediators is important. June Venters QC, who is also a qualified Family and Child Consultant Mediator explained: "We need to help the public understand what mediation is about. Making mediation available at the medical practice has many benefits including being easily accessible and offering anonymity."
