Stead & Simpsons in Caterham's Church Walk Shopping Centre has won a Bronze Keep Britain Tidy Business Award Certificate for a business in the Tandridge District. The awards scheme helps companies minimise the waste they produce and rewards their efforts at Bronze, Silver and Gold levels.

Among the initiatives store manager Eugene Clerkin undertook to gain the award were the legal duty of care for safe storage, handling and disposal of waste, knowledge on disposal of sharp items, recycling, waste management, spillages and keeping their store exterior clean, litter free and tidy.

Mr Clerkin said: "We are happy to take part in the Keep Britain Tidy Campaign and think it is a very innovative idea for Church Walk; we hope other companies will get behind the project in keeping our local area clean."

Church Walk Shopping Centre manager Shelley Filippi said: "The Keep Britain Tidy Business Awards are open to any business, independent or larger companies. Other shops within the centre are working towards their bronze award. Church Walk is aiming to work with local schools and Keep Britain Tidy on future projects."
