Senior citizens aged from 66 to 92 received IT training certificates earlier this week, proving it's never too late to learn a new skill! The 14 mature students had completed the course run by Steve Collis of 'Get Digital'. The course covered the basic aspects of computer and internet use and was funded by a grant obtained from the government by Tandridge District Council. The training sessions took place at Uplands sheltered housing in Eden Way, Warlingham in January and were co-ordinated by Steve Baker. The scheme was the first in Tandridge to receive funding and there are a number of new people looking forward to starting training on the next course being held in April. Brian Perkins, the Vice Chairman of Tandridge District Council and his wife Sonia were invited to Uplands to present the certificates last Tuesday, 8th March. Mr Perkins said: "I am very pleased to be involved in this Tandridge scheme. There is nothing divides society more than youth and age with the division made bigger by the digital age, so initiatives like this are great for helping to close the gap. A lot of people have a fear for something new and different but this shows it really is worth coming to terms with change. Congratulations to all who have their certificates." After receiving his certificate, Uplands resident, 92 year-old Frank Burchell said: "I was afraid of the computer at first but I can now use the internet to check the bus times and find out all the news and sport. I especially like to follow the cricket. I have learned how to play games too! I never thought I would be using computers and the internet at my age but I picked it up straight away, Steve our trainer was very good."
