A much-loved Caterham resident, Eva Daisy May Balchin ('Sister Eva'), who nursed patients at the old St. Lawrence's Hospital for 41 years, passed away on Wednesday 20th April at East Surrey Hospital. Born in Caterham, Eva attended Caterham Hill Infant and Primary schools. Eva left school at 15 years old and started work at Letchers Draper and Outfitters in the High Street in Caterham-on-the-Hill. When Eva was 17, war had broken out so Eva had a choice of either nursing or going into the Land Army. Her father was working at St. Lawrence's Hospital (now demolished) in Coulsdon Road and arranged an interview for her. Eva joined the hospital and was Ward Sister when she retired on June 5th 1985. Whilst working at the hospital Eva met Patrick Balchin, a carpenter and they married on June 30th 1956. Eva and Patrick had a wonderfully happy life together for over 50 years. Patrick had also worked 42 years' unbroken service at St. Lawrence's. A funeral service and burial will take place on Tuesday 10th May at 11am in St. Mary's Church, Caterham-on-the-Hill followed by a committal at Caterham Cemetery. Flowers preferred or donations, if desired, to 'Marie Curie' care of Pinks Funeral Directors, 344 Limpsfield Road, Hamsey Green, CR2 9BX. Telephone no. 020 8657 9922. |
