The village picnic this year, Sunday 19th June, was chosen to mark the grand unveiling of the new notice board on one of Chaldon's most loved green spaces. The board tells the story of the Field on one side whilst on the other there are seasonal things to look for as you walk round. Contributions have been made by Chaldon Village Council, the National Trust, The Downlands Trust and the Rotary Club whilst the project has been master-minded by the Six Brothers Field Management Committee. Before unveiling the notice board, Pat Johnson, Chairman of the Field Management Committee, thanked all those who had made a contribution. She added: "Local farmer Andrew Colebrook kindly came with his mini digger and helped us install the board by digging the trench and then using the digger to help us get it into the trench, this board is very large and very heavy! It has been quite a learning curve for the Local Management Committee from the day we thought 'wouldn't it be nice to have a notice board in the field' to today when we are celebrating its existence. Julia Thomas, Rob Richards Ken Webb and John Spurgin have spent many hours on the project selecting which information and pictures to use and working out spacing, colour and size of the print." The seven acres of Six Brothers field was given to the National Trust in 1926 in memory of two brothers of the Harman family who had died -William in the First World War and Andrew in an accident on a coffee plantation in Mysore. The circle of stones on the west side of the field represents the six Harman brothers. These granite slabs were specially brought from Lundy in the Bristol Channel with which the family, particularly Martin Harman, also had a strong connection. These days the field is much used by the cricket club and youth organisations, by local strollers and for community events such as the annual picnic and the dazzling firework display. In order to make the most of the area a Friends scheme is also being explored. Benefits could include newsletters, social event, lectures and practical workshops.
