Woldingham Station is currently undergoing extensive work by Network Rail to put in a substation that will provide more power in preparation for longer and more frequent trains. The construction started in early June and is planned to finish by 20th November. Kathryn Woodham and Juliana Scrivener who run ' The Interior Workshop' that is located in the station car park, are finding the works quite a challenge. Fencing and workmen's huts have been put up around their interior design shop, making it difficult to see if it is open. The work has also meant the temporary loss of several parking places in the station car park. With the building work being in such a close proximity to the shop, Kathryn is worried her customers might be put off. She said: ""They are trying to disturb us as little as possible but we have cranes inches away from our premises with buckets swinging right by our window. We feel like we should be wearing hard hats! Our customers don't understand what is going on, but the work Network Rail are doing will be very beneficial to commuters in the long run." Site Manager, Peter Bonsall said: "It is unusual for us to work in the station car park – we tend to be in a field somewhere, but unfortunately, here we have taken over. The increased power we are putting in will enable Network Rail to provide a better service in the future. The trains are currently eight carriages long on the East Grinstead line but the ultimate goal is to put that up to twelve carriages and increase the frequency of the trains." The construction phase should be completed at the end of this month which will release some of the car parking spaces. Peter and his team will then move onto the electrical phase and the work will be completed by 20th November, if all goes to plan. |
