The superb 'Y Gyrlais' Welsh Male Voice Choir from the Swansea Valley is coming to Caterham next week to perform a fundraising concert at de Stafford School in Burntwood Lane. The concert is being organised by the Caterham-based charity C.H.E.C.K. (Community Health and Education for Children of Kimilili). The concert will be the fifth that Y Gyrlais have performed in Caterham, who were originally invited by Geraint Jenkins MBE, the founder of C.H.E.C.K. Coming from the Swansea Valley himself, Geraint knows the choir well and many of its members, who are giving their time free of charge to support the charity. The choir, that originally formed in 1963, has the proud record of having won all the recognised 'Semi-Nationals' on more than one occasion, as well as the coveted Royal National Eisteddfod in Cardiff. The choir will be accompanied by musicians from de Stafford School. Speaking about the concert, Geraint said: "The de Stafford students who are taking part are wonderful musicians and it will be another great concert. This one is particularly poignant because of the recent mining tragedy in the Swansea Valley where the choir comes from. Some of the choir members knew the victims personally because they come from Pontardawe, where the tragedy took place. I hope we get plenty of people coming to hear them sing. The proceeds are going to a very good cause." Tickets cost £10 and are available from Geraint Jenkins on 01959 564772 or 07835 303522. Tickets can also be purchased on the door. |
