Surrey County Council is calling for enthusiastic people to volunteer as Surrey Ambassadors on the four days the Olympic cycle events and torch relay take place in the county. More than a million people are expected to visit Surrey during the 2012 Games and up to 450 ambassadors are needed to welcome visitors and provide interesting and useful information about the local area. Volunteers will be at key locations along the cycle route or at railway stations to give directions, provide information about the Olympic events, direct spectators to facilities and encourage them to visit local attractions and events taking place during and after the Games. Ambassadors need to be 18 or over and be able to commit to at least two days of five hours, between 20 July 2012 and 1 August 2012. Denise Saliogopoulos, Surrey County Council's Cabinet Member for Community Services and the 2012 Games, said: "The Surrey Ambassador Scheme will not only enhance the spectator experience but also provide a unique opportunity for residents who want to get involved to play their part in the 2012 Games. It gives us a chance to promote local businesses and attractions and ensure tourists make the most of their visit to Surrey. "Ambassadors will get invaluable experience working directly with the public on a high profile international event. They will meet people from all over the world, get a half-day of training, uniform and a certificate as a memento of their Surrey Ambassador experience." With Surrey hosting four major Olympic events during the London 2012 Games volunteers will be needed for: • The Olympic Torch Relay – 20 July 2012 • The Olympic Road Cycling (men's and women's races) – 28 and 29 July 2012 • The Olympic Cycling Time Trial – 1 August 2012 Applications close on 31 January.
