More than 100 Special Constables took part in a series of operations across the county at the weekend as part of a crackdown on anti-social driving. The weekend proved a resounding success in East Surrey, with operations taking place in Mole Valley, Reigate and Banstead and Tandridge. Surrey's Specials joined forces with full time police officers and partner agencies to tackle anti-social, inconsiderate and dangerous driving as part of National Specials Weekend.
In Tandridge officers carried out checks on the Godstone Road, Caterham and Limpsfield Road, Warlingham, which resulted in Fixed Penalty Notices being issued for seat belt offences, speeding, no MOT and number plate offences. Officers also offered education interventions to 20 motorists for speeding, seat belt and lighting offences.
James W Deller, Chief Officer of Surrey Special Constabulary, said: "Well over 100 Specials, supported by their full time colleagues, took part in a series of operations across the county to address anti-social driving to raise public confidence. The weekend's operations were a resounding success with a number of arrests for a wide range of offences, as well as a number of tickets issued. The operations also allowed us to speak to motorists to educate them about improving their driving behaviour."
Chief Officer Deller said the operations were set up in response to concerns raised by Surrey's residents.
He explained: "The public of Surrey tell us that anti-social driving is an issue for them. Operations such as Drive Smart demonstrate that we listen and actively address those issues. The Special Constabulary is the community policing themselves and therefore makes an active contribution to those things which affect them within their own community."
Chief Constable Peter Neyroud, Chief Executive of the National Policing Improvement Agency, which is responsible for the national policy on specials, said: "Specials provide a unique link with the communities they work within. They have a key role to play in neighbourhood policing with the diverse skills and experiences drawn from a life outside the force, as well as within. Specials are often front line responders, and a key part of this is the contribution that they make is in roads policing, emphasising the importance of this event."
