In late 2010 at the age of just 18, Caterham resident Amrik Nagra was diagnosed with Stage IV Hodgkin Lymphoma, a disease from which, Amrik says, he 'has not yet emerged victorious'. At the time of the diagnosis, Amrik was a sixthform student at Caterham School looking forward to continuing his studies at university. Following the diagnosis, Amrik had to cancel his plans in order to receive the necessary treatment for his illness. Towards the end of 2011, having suffered from Hodgkin Lymphoma for over a year, Amrik felt it was very important to thank those who have helped him along the way. Amrik said: "I was determined to do it in a way that would have a lasting effect as opposed to a small, otherwise generic present." Following a sponsored head shave in December and a quiz held at the Gold Lion pub in Caterham, where nearly £600 was raised, Amrik has already raised over ten thousand pounds for the Royal Marsden Hospital. His next fundraising event is a Quiz Night at North Downs Golf Club on Friday 9th March. In order to increase the proceeds from the night, Amrik is seeking sponsors and donations of raffle prizes for the evening from local businesses and individuals. Amrik said: "All proceeds from the Quiz Night will go directly to the Lymphoma Unit under Professor Cunningham to purchase life-changing equipment for those who really need it. Every penny raised is appreciated so much." For more information about sponsoring Amrik's Quiz Night or donating a raffle prize, please call Alec Herbert on 01883 346947 or e-mail annandalec.
