Local residents have been venturing into Caterham libraries this week to give their views on ‘The Square’ in Caterham Valley and its proposed facelift. The improvements this summer will make the focal point of the Valley less cluttered whilst maintaining a high level of public safety
The £108,000 improvements are being funded by The South East England Development Agency ('SEEDA'), Surrey County Council, Tandridge District Council and the local Parish Councils. The scheme will involve removal of some railings, installation of planters, resurfacing of the road and pavements and new street lighting.
Many local residents feel it is a very positive measure that will smarten up the town centre. Mrs Orchard, of Tupwood Lane, Caterham, commented : “I think I like it, it is making something that is not very functional become functional. It is an improvement.”
Joseph Sargeant, an ex-Stafford Road resident, commented: “It has got to be better for the town. It will make it a lot nicer to look at than the current grey graveyard feel. I always thought they could improve it.”
Mr Sargeant also suggested the plan could go further in the removal of more barriers which he feels enclose the pavements too much.
However, some of those asked did express their concerns. Jeff Bolter, of Stafford Close, commented that changes might cause further problems for larger goods vehicles if the proposed dimensions of the road are adapted. He said: "My immediate concern is, can articulated vehicles get around it? They have enough trouble as it is."
Mr Bolter also said that he thought the safety measures did not extend far enough. With the new youth centre due to be opened very close to the site in Godstone Road, he suggested further railings should be placed outside the building. He fears youngsters may stray into the road.
The anticipated completion time for the project is set for the end of the school summer holidays. Looking forward to the completion of the project, Mr Sargeant said: “It has been a long time coming and could have been done a long time ago. I feel it will increase the number of shoppers coming to the area and is a very positive thing.”
