On Friday 20th April East Surrey MP, Sam Gyimah, attended a Question and Answer session with pupils at de Stafford school in Caterham and offered his support in their bid for a new canteen, which the school has a desperate need for. During his visit, students from all year groups were given the chance to ask Mr Gyimah his opinions on a range of issues, from what being an MP is all about to whether or not the UK should stay as part of the EU. They also asked about the government's opinions regarding the changes in education and how they may impact on young people in schools. Atusa Habibian a year 11 student asked about the English Baccalaureate and how it may affect her further education. Speaking after his visit, Mr Gyimah said: "What was apparent on my visit was that de Stafford is in desperate need of a new canteen and I am committed to working with the school in order to secure the appropriate funding from Surrey County Council to make this happen. "I thoroughly enjoyed the Question and Answer session – the pupils had put a great deal of thought into the questions they posed. "de Stafford is clearly a school on the up, as their most recent Ofsted report demonstrates. It is a testament to the staff and their efforts that the school has seen such an improvement in educational standards." |
