Until now, there hasn't been a venue in Caterham with a good grand piano for general public use. Vivace Pianos, Caterham-on-the-Hill therefore decided to search out a worthwhile instrument for use at the Arc. After much searching – a Bechstein Model E 6'6" grand piano was found. It required a lot of restoration as well as French polishing etc. all of which has been carried out by Vivace Pianos. Funds have been raised by the sale of secondhand music as well as the proceeds of their concerts. Although the work is now complete, more fundraising is planned to cover the various associated costs. The Bechstein which dates back to the end of the 19th century belonged to a jazz pianist who lived locally. During WWII he was part of a band known as Jack Patrick & his Harmonic Syncopators. The piano has been donated by his son Allan as he does not play and the piano has been sitting idle since his father's death some years ago. After the restoration work carried out on it, it is now looking and sounding great & back to work. The very first concert on this piano was held last Friday 11th May by the pupils and teachers of Vivace Pianos (see picture) and was a great success. There will be another concert on Friday 15th June at 7pm at the Arc and will last around an hour. All are welcome. Tickets cost £2.50 per adult – children free. All proceeds will go to The Arc Piano restoration fund. Currently over 100 children and adults have piano lessons at Vivace's custom-built teaching studios. Call 01883 345569 to enquire about lessons as well as pianos for sale or rent, piano removals and tuning and an extensive range of sheet music. The studios are also available for private hire during the day. Already the Arc have been able to rent their space to a theatre workshop group and lots of other concerts are being planned.
