Caterham-on-the-Hill's official beacon was erected on Westway Common last Tuesday, 29th May, for a commemoration of Queen Elizabeth's Diamond Jubilee this weekend. Sponsored by Plan Insurance, the basket was designed by Andy Parr and after various problems erecting it, Knights of Chelsham came to the rescue with a small crane on their lorry to lift the basket into place. The beacon will be lit at 10.26pm on Monday 4th June by a local Cub or Beaver Scout who has done something remarkable in the last year. Nominations are still coming in and the child hasn't been chosen yet. On Monday evening there will be fireworks at 10pm, sponsored by Caterham Hill Parish Council. There will be entertainments and traditional games such as Croquet, Aunt Sally or Bat and Trap on Westway Common from 8pm. Free entry for all. There will still be time to sing your heart out at the Music for the Jubilee event in nearby St Mary's Church at 6pm. Featuring popular British Proms music, tickets for the concert costing £20 for adults and £12.50 for under 18s and pensioners are available from Vivace Pianos in the High Street, Caterham-on-the-Hill and JJ Browne Jewellers in Godstone Road, Caterham Valley or on the door. |
