Richard Stilgoe, the founder of Orpheus, the performing arts school for disabled students in Godstone, is to receive a Knighthood. Orpheus was founded in in 1997 in Richard's former family home in Surrey. Orpheus was born out of Richard's experiences using the performing arts to inspire greater self-confidence and independence, especially for people with disabilities whose access to such opportunities can be limited. Orpheus began with only five students, but is now home to 26 young, disabled adults that live on campus, as well as many more students who access the service during the day. Orpheus promotes transition and personal development through performing arts so students gain the skills to live independently in the community and to make informed choices about their futures. Richard continues to tirelessly support the work of Orpheus not only with his responsibilities as a Trustee, but also by leading song-writing courses with students as well as constantly raising vital funds and awareness of Orpheus. Most recently he spent a week working with Orpheus students alongside prisoners at HMP Highdown. This innovative project culminated in a fantastic concert which was a moving experience for the audience and, most importantly, an invaluable creative outlet for all involved. The CEO of Orpheus, Graham Whitehead, said: "Orpheus would not exist without Richard and we owe him a great debt of gratitude for all of the lives that he has helped to change for the better. "We cannot think of a more deserving person to receive this great honour and students, staff and volunteers at Orpheus join me in congratulating Richard on this achievement."
