de Stafford School and de Stafford Sports Centre celebrated in style for the official opening of the refurbished sports hall that took place on Monday 16th July at 3.00pm. The event was well attended by local councillors, local community stakeholders – in particular Caroline Longhurst, Head of de Stafford School, Sarah Davison, Tandridge Education Partnership, Governors and staff from de Stafford School and Mark Symons from Tandridge Trust along with de Stafford students. The students demonstrated their skills in badminton, basketball and trampolining in the sports hall. The Sports Hall was officially opened by Cllr. David Hodge, Leader of Surrey County Council and Cllr. Sakina Bradbury, Chairman of Tandridge District Council. The first duty for David Hodge was to challenge the students at badminton. After this he joined with Sakina Bradbury to cut the ribbon and announce the refurbished sports hall officially open. Cllr David Hodge was thanked by Jezaniah Martins who also told the story of the refurbishment from a student's point of view. David Hodge came to office as Leader of Surrey County Council in 2011. One of his first visits as Leader was to de Stafford where he visited the school and the sports centre. He was shown the damaged floor and was immediately aware of the problems the loss of this facility would be to the Caterham community and all the local schools who benefit from this facility, not just de Stafford School. David promised he would find a solution. Through David Hodge's support and intervention de Stafford were given £30,000 towards the cost of replacing the sports hall floor. Caroline Longhurst said: "I would like to say on behalf of the students and staff of de Stafford school and the local community how grateful we are for his and Surrey County Council's support. We would also like to thank Sheila Bennett, School Business Manager, who coordinated, planned and project managed the improvements." Thanks were made for the support and professionalism of Jed Hill, Managing Director of REC Coatings and his team, who were responsible for the installation of the sports floor. They ensured the whole process was managed to ensure the best possible outcome for everyone. Thanks were also made to Tandridge Trust for redecorating the sports hall to complete the finished look. |
