After months of hard training, 13 year old Scott Smith from Hamsey Green has won his very first gold medal in Taekwondo. Scott won the award at the 15th British International Open competition at the K2 arena in Crawley that was held on Sunday 15th July. The first round was against a higher grade (a red tag) and more experienced fighter but Scott took control and won the match by 13 points to 3, taking him through to the final. The final round was also against a higher grade (a blue belt) and although this fight was much harder, Scott fought well and won by 7 points to 6. Scott's Mum Jackie Smith said: "Scott had never won a competition in Taekwondo before and so he was determined to do better this time. He had been training hard before the competition and his extra fitness shone through." Scott, who is a green belt in Taekwondo, is coached by Master Dean Gibbs at Chung Yong Taekwondo club based at Oakhyrst Grange School in Caterham-on-the-Hill. |
