On Friday 10th August, to celebrate the Olympics coming to London, patients at the Caterham Dene Hospital were invited to divide into teams and compete in Olympic themed games and activities.

The day, organised by First Community Health & Care, was a great success, with patients all wanting to take part in the six events, which included, javelin, basketball, a relay, a penalty shoot out, handball and a triathlon.

First Community Physiotherapist Beverley Hughan organised the day at Caterham Dene Hospital and tailored the activities to each patient's level of physical movement. Bev said "it was great to show the patients that they can all take part in activities and sport related events. By the end I think everyone enjoyed it, there was lots of laughing and competitive spirit".

Before the day patients had been helping to make Olympic style decorations including paper chains to make the day special. Bev also organised Olympic themed word searches, crosswords and sudoku. In all, 18 patients took part in the activities, who were cheered on by family and friends. Everyone received a prize and a certificate at the end of the day.

Andrew Glass, patient on Caterham Dene Ward commented on how well staff had done; "We were all so excited about the day, and the staff really went all out to make it happen. It's very difficult to do exercises, especially once admitted to hospital, that aren't going to embarrass you. I've never taken part in anything like it before; it was a day to remember!"
