Caterham's 2012 Olympic middle-distance hopeful, Hannah Brooks, recently spent a day at Birmingham University with two fellow athletes from Crawley Athletic Club and her mentor, Dame Kelly Holmes. Hannah trains at Crawley AC alongside two other rising stars, Charlotte Best from Redhill and Dani Christmas from Horley. All three girls are part of the Aviva funded 'On Camp with Kelly' initiative and have benefitted greatly from the mentoring, educational and financial support of the camp.
The aim of the get-together was to reflect, evaluate and build on their 2009 season, which saw good performances from all three girls, with Hannah and Dani reducing their 800m lifetime bests.
Most recently however Charlotte has been selected for the Aviva Great Britain and Northern Ireland Team in the 1500m for the IAAF World Indoor Championships which take place in Doha on 12-14 March.
The day kicked off with some tough training sessions with Kelly on the sidelines to offer encouragement. Throughout the day the girls were able to chat to Kelly about any problems or concerns that needed to be addressed. After a brief rest for lunch, Kelly put the girls through their paces with a tough core stability work-out before sending them home tired but thoroughly focussed on their goals.
Afterwards, Hannah said: "The On Camp With Kelly get together was really enjoyable. It gave me the chance to train hard with the other girls, and pick up some useful new exercises in the core stability session in the afternoon. I had a difficult time early on in the winter as I suffered with a stress reaction in my foot, but training has been picking up after Christmas, and I am now looking forward to the 2010 track season."
