The motion: 'A woman's place is in the home' prompted a lively debate at The Grasshopper Inn yesterday evening (Thursday 4th October). 'Table Talks' hosted by Emma B of Smooth Radio is being held at The Grasshopper Inn, Moorhouse, near Westerham, once a month and there is no entry fee. Members of the public can just turn up and take part in the debate after listening to a panel of guest speakers give their personal views on the motion. Last night's guest speakers were James Whale, the outspoken commentator from LBC radio; children's TV presenter, Kirsten O'Brien; 'Loaded' magazine editor from 2003-2010, Martin Daubney; musician, Jon Allen; local stay-at-home mum, Kate Devito and anonymous Twitter blogger, 'Fleet Street Fox'. After introducing the guest speakers Emma B said: "The reason why we are doing this is because pubs like The Grasshopper Inn have been here for a long time and have always been a central part of the community, but these days they are not full of the lively discussions about topical issues like they used to be. We all know that when we go to pubs, we actually say very little to each other these days, what with TVs on the wall etc. We want to bring talk back to British pubs and put the world to rights!" After listening to the different views put forward on the subject by the various speakers, the topic was opened up for general discussion about the merits or otherwise of mums staying at home to raise children in their pre-school years. Many people continued the discussion in the bar when the debate officially ended and had the opportunity to chat with the guest speakers. The next 'Table Talks' at The Grasshopper Inn is being held at 8.30pm on Thursday 1st November. Keep an eye on 'What's On' on The Caterham and District Independent website for more details nearer the time. |
