Millie Clark, 15, from Caterham, has been selected Surrey St John Ambulance Cadet of the Year for 2010.
She was presented with her trophy and sash of office by the Commander of Surrey St John Ambulance, Hugh Riley JP, at the County First Aid Competitions held at the University of Surrey on Sunday March 7. Her deputy is Rebecca Staunton, 16, from Windle Valley Division.
Millie is a studying for her GCSEs at Caterham School. She has only been a member of St John for two years but has already shown enormous promise. She has successfully completed her Leadership One and Cadet Training courses and attended public duties as a first aider.
The Cadet of the Year is chosen via a tough competition in which candidates have to do a presentation, team exercises and an interview. "I didn't think I was going to win," said Millie, "But I am really looking forward to the year. Being a member of St John Ambulance is very rewarding and interesting. I have used my first my skills on members of the public and they are such useful skills to have."
As Cadet of the Year, Millie will help officiate at county events such as the Transfer of Colour ceremony, the Carol Service and St John Competitions Day and she will be entered for the national Cadet of the Year competition. This is a tough but very rewarding three day contest in London.
Millie is a member of the Caterham Division of St John Ambulance based at Timber Hill Road, Caterham, one of the most active divisions in Surrey. On Saturday , 24th April, members will be offering free first aid training to the public as part of Surrey St John's annual Breath of Life Day.
