Until a few years ago Whyteleafe had a Royal British Legion Branch and Club. Due to various factors the Branch no longer exists and the club premises have fallen into disrepair and have been sold for redevelopment.
Whyteleafe has long been associated with our armed forces and the War Graves of St. Luke's Church are the final resting place of many brave members of the RAF who served during the Battle of Britain.
County Councillor Sally Marks, District Councillor Tom Dempsey, Col. John Lowndes TD, CPO Michael Bromley RN retd., and Mr. George Gadd are joining together to form a new Whyteleafe Royal British Legion Branch.
A public meeting will be held on Thursday, 8th November, 2012 in the Function Room of the Whyteleafe Tavern at 7pm. This meeting will begin the process that allows a new branch to be formed. It is hoped that local people will want to take part to keep the link going between Whyteleafe and The Royal British Legion.
George Gadd sid: “In just under two years time the nation will mark the 100 years anniversary of the start of WW1 and continue to remember the millions of servicemen and women who have sacrificed themselves for their country in order to give us the freedoms we all enjoy today. We hope that many local residents will attend this public meeting on 8th November and play their part by joining us in this new initiative. To misquote Lord Kitchener 'Whyteleafe Needs You'”. Let us all make sure that Whyteleafe is ready to do its bit.”
On November 11th 2012 there will be a Service of Remembrance at St. Luke’s Church. The proceedings start at 10.30am with the laying of the wreaths ceremony prior to the service. There will be a formal Uniformed Parade after the Service.
