The President of Caterham Rotary Club, Peter Georgiades, completed the 26.2 mile Florence Marathon recently in aid of the South East Cancer Help Centre in Purley despite being diagnosed with severe achilles tendonitis a week before. Speaking after the marathon in November Peter said: "As I ran over the start line I felt as though someone was trying to hammer a nail through my foot. However I was determined to persevere. I got used to the pain and hobbled along for five and a half hours. To my wife Gail's disappointment I managed to survive!" Peter aims to raise £2,620 for the cancer help centre that started up in 1983. The centre started off in a small home in Caterham. However, in order to accommodate the growing numbers of attendants the centre is now located in the Gatehouse of the old waterworks in Purley. The centre brings cancer patients together allowing them to provide emotional support for each other whilst undergoing treatment or following the diagnosis of cancer. During his time as President of Caterham Rotary some of Peter's other objectives are to organise a Caterham half marathon to raise up to £100k for Shooting Star Chase, a Surrey children's hospice. He also wants to work closer with Harestone, Oxted and Titsey Rotary clubs and attract younger members to Rotary.
