The squash and racketball section of Warlingham Sports Club has secured Olympic legacy funding from Sport England's Inspired Facilities Fund. New changing rooms and a new glass back for one of the club's courts will be funded by an award of £50,000 from the National Lottery along with additional funds raised by the members and by a generous donation of their services by Howard Fairbairn HMK Architects. A new ladies changing room will replace the existing 60s built facility, which had become cramped and dingy, with a bright, modern space, new showers and greater security. The men's changing room will also be expanded and modernised. Replacing the existing solid back wall with a glass wall on one of the squash courts will vastly improve the spectator experience as well as providing a better environment for coaching, particularly of juniors. A general club facelift will include upgraded court lighting on all three courts and a new energy efficient boiler. Club Chairman, Rod Gemmell, said: "Enthusiasm for playing squash is on the increase after a period of decline. A determination to get squash into the 2020 Olympics has meant that the game is now much better organised and promoted. We are seeing an increase in membership and these improved facilities will really enhance our appeal to new members particularly to women for whom the new changing rooms and the glass back court will be a great attraction. Anyone looking after children will be able to bring them along during the day and enjoy playing on a court from which they can still keep an eye on them. Local Councillor, Simon Morrow, said: "I am delighted at the news that Warlingham Squash Club has succeeded in securing this substantial grant from Sports England. Warlingham Sports Club, of which the Squash Club is an important part, plays a vital role in the community of Warlingham which I represent, and it is very important that its facilities are of good quality so that it continues to attract and retain members and provide them with the high class playing experience that they require."
