On Saturday 16th February there is a rare opportunity to hear in Caterham some of the country's leading performers in the Baroque music field, in a performance of the St John Passion by J S Bach. Come and hear the clarity of this great work in a performance with one singer to a part. In recent years there has been a lot of discussion as to how many singers Bach had, and whether some of his cantatas and other vocal works were originally sung one-to-a-part rather than by a larger choir. We will never know whether he ever performed this Passion in that way, but it certainly reveals it in a new light. The performers include Julian Podger (Evangelist) and Jonathan Saunders (Christus) with the specialist Baroque ensemble Canzona and will be directed from the organ by Alastair Ross. The other four singers are Gill Ross (soprano), Jill Caudle (alto), Rupert Charlesworth (tenor) and Bruce Saunders (bass). You may know Jill Caudle better as the Tandridge District Councillor for Valley Ward in Caterham. However her other "hats" include being the General Manager for Canzona, helping to run the church choir at St John's Church, and singing as a soloist and in small choirs both locally and around the Country. Jill says: "I have sung this Passion with many choirs over the years, but I've wanted to have the opportunity to do it one-to-a-part and my recent birthday seemed a good excuse. Following my mother's sudden death in May 2011, this also seemed a good use for some of her money to put it together, as she was always a strong supporter of Canzona and baroque music in general. I'm delighted that so many excellent musicians have agreed to take part, including one or two others who have pursued a main career away from music performance whilst still performing to a very high standard, as well as my sister Theresa (baroque violin and viola d'amore), founder and director of Canzona, and my brother Mark on baroque cello and viola da gamba." The performance is at St John's Church, Clareville Road, Caterham CR3 6LA on Sat 16th February at 7pm.
