On Wednesday 30th January Caterham Rotary President, Peter Georgiades along with his friend Mike Pavlou presented a cheque for just over £1,900 to Liz French, the Manager of the South East Cancer Help Centre in Purley. Peter, with the support of many friends and colleagues and his family, collected the money following his magnificent effort in completing the Florence Marathon last November. When 61year old Peter took over the Chair of Caterham Rotary Club last July he vowed to run his first ever marathon in his year of office. In addition Peter designated the South East Cancer Help Centre to be the recipient of all sponsorship monies raised in recognition of the help they gave to his close friend Mike Pavlou when he was ill a few years ago. After much deliberation Peter chose the beautiful city of Florence for his maiden marathon, firstly because he had not visited there before and secondly because his son Ryan had previously run the Florence marathon twice and had assured him that it was a flat course. Ideally he didn't want a hilly challenging course for the task in hand! Peter spent many months training with his running club South London Harriers as well as running to and from his office in Purley. He was well on course for a four hour finish until, with a week to go to the race, Peter injured his right foot. He was eventually diagnosed with severe Achilles Tendonitis. However he was still determined to complete the 26.2 miles in Florence and after seeking medical advice he ran the Marathon. Although in considerable pain he crossed the finishing line in five hours and 30 minutes. |
