Residents’ ‘Green Corridors’ project provides new trees for local avenues
Published: Friday, 26 April 2013 06:27

On Saturday 13th April five new trees were planted in Manor Avenue and Park Avenue in Caterham-on-the- Hill as a result of a local fundraising project called 'Green Corridors' to replace old and dead trees in the roads.

After nearly a year of dialogue with Surrey County Council the cost quoted by the council proved to be too expensive so the residents clubbed together to purchase the trees themselves making a significant saving. Manor Avenue resident, Mary Mountain, said: "The trees are costing us £90 each to plant which is significantly less than the £295 quoted by Surrey County Council. Caterham-on-the- Hill Parish Council have helped us by covering the indemnity insurance." The first tree to be planted was a Rowan outside the home of Monica Harwood in Manor Avenue.

Monica said: "Years ago there used to be a gorgeous cherry tree here but that came down during a storm so I am delighted to have a new tree outside my house at last!" The residents hope to get some funding so they can continue their 'Green Corridors' project with more new trees.
