Since Ofsted took over from CSCI, Sunnydown School in Caterham-on-the-Hill has had three residential Ofsted Inspections. The school has been judged 'Outstanding' on all occasions, something the staff, pupils and parents are extremely proud of.
Sunnydown is a residential and day special school that meets the special educational needs of secondaryage boys of average to above average academic ability who have severe specific learning difficulty and/or dyslexia.
The latest Ofsted report from January 2010 recognised that Sunnydown has many strengths; the school encourages pupils to play an active part in decisionmaking, designing new activities and the general day to day routines to name but a few. Inspectors praised the wide range of extra-curricular activities on offer to the pupils, with recent activities including climbing, canoeing, street dancing, sailing and Duke of Edinburgh Award.
Staff and management were also praised for their dedication to personal development and continuous improvement to ensure the school continues to move with the times.
Mr Moore Armstrong Head Teacher said: "It is a wonderful achievement that we have obtained three consecutive outstanding judgements from Ofsted. It is rewarding to see the efforts of our staff, governors, pupils and parents recognised. As head teacher I am aware that excellence can only be maintained if there is a sustained team commitment to going the extra mile. We are fortunate that our care team is lead by Tammy Hawkins who leads from the front and supports every pupil in a remarkable way."
