On Thursday 23rd May the funeral procession of Caterham resident Tommy Pavey stopped at the memorial outside the Caterham Royal British Legion and Ex Servicemen's Club in Townend on it's way to Worth Crematorium.

Tommy, who was 101 years old, was one of General Wingate's British Chindits, the special force that fought in North Burma in the Second World War and was the last surviving member of the Burma Star Association. As a member of the Caterham Branch of the Royal British Legion it was hoped he would unveil the inscription on the front of the memorial after it was completed last year.

Sadly Tommy's health prevented this. As a fitting tribute, it was unveiled by two Royal British Legion members on his behalf.
