With exhibits evoking the West End Shows and Doctor Who, Caterham's Summer Horticultural Show promises top local entertainment. It takes place on Saturday 20th July at Hillcroft School, Chaldon Road, Caterham. The show will be open to the public from 2.30pm, with presentation of cups and medals at 4.30pm. The entrance fee is only 40 pence. Caterham on the Hill Parish Council is sponsoring the hanging basket category. A parish council representative will present the prize at 4.30pm on the day. The event showcases the hard work of local gardeners and allotmenteers. Society Chairman Debbie Fox is hoping young people will put on a show of their talents. Debbie said: "There is a skills shortage in horticulture. Young people are the future of the industry. The show offers the chance for them to perform on the gardening stage." The Society is looking for the best young local gardener aged 16-21 years old. It has introduced the Roy Skelton Cup which marks the contribution of the Society's much loved previous chairman of the same name. To win it, the young competitor has to score the highest total points in horticultural classes in the 2013 spring, summer and autumn shows. Since nobody of that age group entered the spring show, the accolade is still up for grabs. Other highlights in just under 100 show categories look set to include floral arrangements with themes such as 'Fit for a Queen' and 'Blooming Lovely'. Judges will also sample jams and cheese scones made by hopeful entrants. Show Secretary Robert Kelly will be running the summer show, he said: "Winning a cup or medal at this show is like receiving an 'Oscar' to local gardeners. Anyone may enter the show. All you need to do is submit a form, with an entrance fee under 50 pence per entry to the Show Secretary, no later than 8pm on Thursday 18th July. All entrants aged 6-16 years will receive a certificate.' Entry to the table exhibit categories closed on Saturday 6th July. There is still time to enter the many other classes. For more information and a schedule of classes for the 2013 shows and forms for entry, see the 'What's on' section of the Society's website at http://caterhamdistricthorticulturalsoc.weebly.com. |
