Heatwave does not spoil Summer Show |

Caterham and District Horticultural Society held its summer show on Saturday 20th July at Hillcroft School, Chaldon Road, Caterham. Society President Roger Davies presented the trophies at 4.30pm. 21 hopefuls entered just under 100 classes. Entries ranged from floral arrangements to shortbread and children's interpretations of a 'Doctor Who' theme. Society Chairman Debbie Fox said: "last year our local growers dealt with drought followed by a rainy summer. This year, the heatwave has brought different challenges. However, it hasn't dried up enthusiasm for our Summer Show." Summary of prize winners Hanging basket class: first prize, mr chris wayman, second prize mr david williams and third prize mrs madeleine cross. Cups and medals 1) The Gosden Shield for the best vegetable exhibit, Mr David Wayman. 2) The Winter-Thomas Silver Challenge Cup for the best competitive exhibit of cut flowers or pot plants, Mr Ian Rogers. 3) The Parnell Silver Challenge Cup for amateurs, Mr Joe Perera. 4) The W Sandiford Rose Bowl for the most points in rose classes, Mr Joe Perera. 5) The Blanche Staley Challenge Cup for the best display be an accredited organisation, on the theme of 'West End Shows', Beechwood Women's Group. 6) C & DHS Ladies' Challenge Cup for the most points in cookery and handicrafts, Mrs Moyra Brohier. 7) The Charlotte Farndell Cup for the most points in flower arranging, Ms Debbie Fox (Society Chairman). 8) The Ray and Mary Cup for the child gaining the highest number of points in children's classes, Miss Tabitha Wren. 9) The Gratwick Cup for the highest points in fruit classes, Mr David Wayman. 10) The Lille Catterall Cup for sweet peas, Mr Ray Brohier. 11) The Attridge Cup for sweet peas (three distinct varieties), Mrs M Meeneghan. 12) RDL Ford Memorial Cup for an exhibit of white flowers, Mrs Fancourt. 13) The Jack Allum Memorial Cup for a fuchsia in a pot, Mr Chris Wayman. 14) The Garden News Shield, Mrs M Meeneghan. Caterham-on-the-Hill Parish Council sponsored the hanging basket category. The stunning winning baskets were made up of pink fuchsias and purple petunias. Parish council Chairman, Sarah Burningham, presented the first prize of £12 to Chris Wayman of Avenue Road, Caterham. The basket included several trailing varieties of fuchsia. Beechwood Women's Group won the Blanche Staley Cup for their table exhibit interpreting the theme of 'West End Shows'. The first prize for accredited young persons' organisations interpreting the theme of 'Doctor Who' was won by 9th Caterham Guides. It included an undulating space age landscape, intricate alien hidey-holes and a handmade tardis. Runners-up were the 4th Caterham Brownies. Their exhibit featured a chronology of Doctor Whos and his assistants and a Tardis with decoration on all sides.
