This week's meeting of the Caterham Round Table saw the inauguration of the new Chairman for 2010-2011, Clive Harper, who is taking over from Paul Smith. The evening also saw Andy Self stepping into the role of Honarary President, taking over from Barry Louvel. As Chairman, Clive will be at the helm during a very special year for the club.
"The Caterham Round Table is celebrating its 60th anniversary next year so we will be holding a big dinner dance to celebrate," said Clive. "We are pleased to say that the club is growing – we had five new members join us last year."
Clive has been a member of the Round Table for three years. After being away working in Europe for a few years, he soon made some new friends by joining the Round Table when he returned to the UK. The members all have different backgrounds, but their day jobs are put onto the back burner when it comes to Round Table activities. "We have a good cross-section of blokes; we are a group with a social conscience," said Clive. "I enjoy the whole thing because every two weeks on a Wednesday night I can completely switch off from everything else and have a fun evening with a great crowd. We have a lot of activites going on and we raise a fair bit of money for local good causes which gives us a lot of satisfaction."
The Round Table events lined up for this year include the Bicycle Hill Climb up Waller Lane which is being organised as part of this year's Caterham Festival, as well as the Boat Race which will be held during the Street Party in Caterham-on-the-Hill on 30th May. The Caterham Round Table also organises the annual fireworks night at the Dene Field in Caterham, their biggest event of the year along with the magnificent Round Table Ball held every January. Apart from their community activities, the guys also organise social events for themselves and their families, which this year includes a brewery tour to Westerham Brewery in May, and a 'Fathers and Sons' camping weekend.
"If anyone is interested in joining the Caterham Round Table I would say to them 'Come and along and see and try it out'. It won't cost anything when you visit, we will pay for your dinner!" said Clive. "Everyone has busy lives these days but people still do what they choose to make time for. We are a relaxed group who have good fun and it would be great to have some more new members."
The Caterham Round Table meet on the first and third Wednesday evening of the month at the Surrey National Golf Club in Chaldon, 7.30pm for 8pm. If there is an extra Wednesday in the month they will have a sports evening such as bowling or shooting.
