Sixth Form students and staff at Oasis Academy Coulsdon are celebrating their first ever set of A Level results in the history of the Academy, with high achievers setting the benchmark for future generations of Sixth Form students. Executive Principal, David Millar said: "I would like to congratulate all our Sixth Form students today on their outstanding achievement. We are really pleased with our first set of A level results and would like to thank staff and students who have worked so hard. We are delighted to report a 100% pass rate at A2 Level, with 40% of the cohort achieving A* - B Grades and 60% A* - C grades". Eighteen year old Sam Opyio from Croydon achieved A*AB in Maths, Physics and Computing at A2 (along with an A in Further Maths and B in Business Studies at AS Level) and, inspired by his Maths Teacher, Tom Shorney, intends to study Maths at University. Initial analyses of the results show that Maths and Languages were two of the strongest subject performances, along with English Literature, Technology and Drama & Theatre Studies. A star performer for the future, Naftacia Darling, 18 from Croydon, intends to take up her offer of a place at the University of Bedfordshire to study Dance & Professional Practice having achieved Distinction in Production Arts, Distinction* BTEC Business Studies and a Pass in Performing Arts. D'Andra Buchanan from Croydon who is already holding an unconditional offer to study Art at the University of Creative Arts in Epsom is now celebrating having achieved top A and B grades in Art, Textiles and BTEC Business Studies (Distinction*). Eighteen year old James Jugghoo from Shirley was delighted with his B grades for Maths, History and Business Studies and Distinction in BTEC Sport. He intends to remain at the Academy to take further A2 Levels before going on to University to study Law. Joanne Trott, 18 from Croydon, was overjoyed to secure her offer of a place at Southampton Solent University to study Psychology. Joanne gained a C in Psychology, D in Food Technology and Distinction* in Level 3 BTEC Business Studies. In what was a particularly fitting tribute after 41 years of teaching, nine students under the tutelage of Business Studies Teacher Jenny Butcher, who celebrated her retirement at the Academy a few weeks ago, achieved Distinction* (the equivalent of an 'A' Grade) in Level 3 BTEC Business Studies. At the beginning of this academic year, the Academy welcomed back Chantelle Lindsay, who, having left after her GCSEs decided to return to continue her Post 16 studies in an environment which she knew would be more supportive to her needs. Chantelle was thrilled with her B grade in RE and Merit in Level 3 BTEC Science and intends to pursue a career in wildlife conservation. The Academy hosted European students on an education exchange programme this year. Coming to live in a foreign country, away from family, in a completely different education environment, the students had a lot of adjustments to cope with but all did exceptionally well in their exams: Nicolas Gilbert from Belgium achieved a grade A in Art and Distinction* in Level 3 BTEC Business Studies; Chantal Morgenstern from Germany achieved a B in her A2 German exam, C AS French, and a Pass in her AS Drama & Theatre Studies. The Academy's intrepid adventurers who have just returned from Bangalore where they worked as community volunteers, were all their celebrating A and AS Level successes: Daniel Borer was "so happy" with his B grade in Food Technology, Jessica Little a C in Food Technology and ICT; Mairi Hibberd-McWhirr a D in ICT at A Level and D in Psychology at AS Level. All three will continue their studies at the Academy for another year and hope to return to Bangalore. Daniel is even considering going to University there. Assistant Principal and Director of Sixth Form Philip McCullagh said: "I am proud of all the students they have worked so hard and fully deserve their success. They have all shown a great deal of grit and determination to achieve such great results." |
