Community spirit spread through Whyteleafe Recreation Ground last Sunday 8th September, at the lively 'Picnic In The Park'. The day was organised by Whyteleafe Events Committee and declared open by Local Surrey County Councillor, Sally Marks, who said: "Picnic In The Park is all about the community of Whyteleafe working together… I hope you all have a wonderful day and that the rain stays away!" World War II veteran Michael Bromley, representing the British Legion, recited the exaltation, with Chelsea Pensioner Denis Shiels also in attendance. Attractions at the event included a dog show, birds of prey display, tug-o-war and a licensed bar that provided a welcome shelter from the rain during a couple of downpours. Ridge Radio provided music and there were live performances by local musicians including saxophonist and singer Suzie G and 17-year-old singer Kat Head who stunned the audience with her original material. Sam Gyimah MP and his wife Nicky attended the event and spent time browsing the many stalls including the Help for Heroes tent. The proceeds from the day will go to Help for Heroes, St Catherine's Hospice and The Maypole Project. |
