On Wednesday 6th November over 90 people attended a moment in history in Caterham when a time capsule was buried at the new Oakgrove development in Coulsdon Road, Caterham-on-the-Hill. Representatives from the developers Berkeley Homes attended the event along with local residents including school children from nearby Clifton Hill School and Hillcroft School. The capsule will be opened in 25 years' time in 2038. The contents of the time capsule included a range of 2013 memorabilia, contributions from Clifton Hill School and Hillcroft School, music and film charts of the day, Oakgrove's marketing brochure, famous buildings completed in 2013, the front page of the national and local papers, and a book dating from the 1900s' with postcards of Caterham. Pupils from the two schools took part in the time capsule project by completing activity packs during their summer holidays, which were then entered into a competition, with the top three from each school placed in the capsule. Matthew Biddle, managing director of Berkeley Homes, said: "We're extremely proud to play a part in bringing the Caterham community together for a fantastic morning that the children will remember for years to come. Our work with the community surrounding Oakgrove is extremely important to us, and we were absolutely thrilled with the number of people that turned out yesterday to take part in the time capsule event." Councillor Eithne Webster, said: "The time capsule is a wonderful idea for Oakgrove. St Lawrence's Hospital was an important part of the history of Caterham-on-the-Hill and it is fantastic to think that here, today, the items being buried and this ceremony will be history for tomorrow's residents. Don't forget a date for your diaries in 2038!" |
