Does your garden need some TLC? Are you thinking of getting green fingered this summer? Or do you just want to see what your neighbours garden looks like? Open Gardens has raised over £70,000 for St Catherine's Hospice to continue provide free care and support to patients and families throughout Mid Sussex and East Surrey. Open Gardens 2014 is launching in April with 21 gardens opening throughout our local community to show off their hidden secrets and unique features. Whether you want to pick up some tips or just want a fun filled family day out this year, why not visit a garden near you. Open Gardens 2014 is sponsored by Roger Ceramics (www.roger-ceramics.com) List of Gardens April Sunday 6 April and 13 April (11am - 4.30pm) The Chalet, Tupwood Lane, Caterham CR3 6ET Contact: Victoria Lawrence, 01293 447376 The Chalet sits on top of a hill of 55 acres with magnificent views towards the South Downs. Explore tens of thousands of daffodils; lakes, ornamental ponds, koi pond and a waterfall with a myriad of wildlife . Rolls Royce, Bentley, Jaguar, helicopter and Cessna plane are also on view. Visitors can enjoy tea, cake and live music. (Dogs, disabled, refreshments.) Fee: £5.00 per person entrance, children free. Friday 18 April until Sunday 20 April (8.30am-5.00pm daily) Brimardia, 83a Nutfield Road, Merstham, Redhill, RH1 3HD Contact: Mike and Maureen Hooker, 01737 643603 Grand Easter Plant Sale with a range of vegetables, shrubs and gardening equipment will be available to purchase at reduced prices. The garden will be open for breakfasts, lunches and afternoon cream tea served in the conservatory and outside under the gazebo. (Dogs, disabled, refreshments, parking.) Fee: No charge. May Friday 2 May (9am-4pm) Burleigh Oaks House, East Street, Turner's Hill, Crawley, RH10 4PZ Contact: John and Pam Mayne, 01342 712852 Turner's Hill plant sale offering everything from bedding plants to vegetable plants for all types of gardens. Second hand books and greetings cards for sale and a raffle are also available. (Dogs, refreshments, disabled access.) Fee: free. Sunday 4 May (2pm-6pm) Birchanger, High Street, Balcombe, Haywards Heath, RH17 6JY Contact: Marian Erritt, 01444 413391 Birchanger is a beautiful seven acre garden with magnificent displays of rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias and magnolias. Explore the lily pond, fountains and arboretum. (Refreshments, disabled, dogs.) Fee: £4, children free. Saturday 17th May (2pm-5pm) Leigh Plant Sale, Leigh Village Green, RH2 8NJ Contact: Victoria, 01293 447376 Stalls with perennials, vegetables and bedding plants as well as refreshments and home made cakes available. All the proceeds will be distributed between St Catherine's Hospice, local Leigh charities and the Leigh Garden Society. (Refreshments.) Fee: free. Sunday 18 May (2pm-5pm) Colwood House, Cuckfield Lane, Warninglid, RH17 5SP Contact: Mrs Brenan, 01444 461831 Twelve acres of garden to explore with mature and specimen trees from the late 1800s. Formal parterre, rose and herb gardens with a 100ft terrace. Forsythia tunnel as well as water features and a lake with an island and temple. (Disabled, dogs, refreshments.) Fee: £5, children free. Sunday 25 May & 26 May and Saturday 16 August &17 August (2pm-6pm) The Old Croft, South Holmwood, Dorking, RH5 4NT Contact: David Lardner-Burke, www.lardner-burke.org.uk The Old Croft is a four and a half acre parkland garden. Stunning views including a pond fed by a natural stream running over rocky weirs, perennial borders, tropical bamboo maze and many specimens of trees and shrubs. (Disabled, dog, refreshments.) June Sunday 15 June and Sunday 10 August (11am-5pm) Beedinglee, Brighton Road, Lower Beeding, Horsham, RH13 6NQ Contact: Mrs Jo Longley, 01403 891251 Originally part of the Leonardslee Estate, the 6-acre natural garden has evolved since the 1987 hurricane with many interesting and unusual trees and shrubs. An informal garden with hidden paths and a secret garden to be explored. (Refreshments, dogs, disabled, parking.) Fee: £4, children free. Wednesday 18th June (1pm-4pm) St Catherine's Hospice Open Garden Afternoon, Malthouse Road, Crawley, RH10 6BH Contact: Gabi Field 01293 447319 Here at St Catherine’s, most of our In-Patient Unit rooms open out onto our private gardens. Families can relax and enjoy precious moments together. Join us in celebrating our Open Gardens and see our colourful flower displays. (Disabled, dog, refreshments.) Fee: free, donations welcome. Sunday 22 June (2pm-6pm) Tollsworth Manor, Rook Lane, Chaldon, Caterham, CR3 5BQ Contact: Carol and Gordon Gillett, 01737 643751 Old fashioned cottage garden surrounding 14th century manor house. Lovely countryside views, herbaceous borders, many old fashioned roses, delphiniums and peonies. Tea, coffee and homemade cakes in aid of St Catherine's Hospice. Plants for sale. Fee: £3.50 Sunday 22 June (1pm-5pm) Balcombe Gardens Krawden, Victoria Road, Balcombe, RH17 6LJ Contact: Annie Bryant Krawden is a beautiful garden with shrubs, roses, herbaceous borders and a small gravel viewing area. There is also a fruit and vegetable garden and a Mediterranean area with a water feature. (Refreshments, dogs, disabled.) Winterfield, Oldlands Avenue, Balcombe, RH17 6LP Contact: Sue Howe, 01444 811380 Winterfield is a beautiful garden including herbaceous and shrub borders, pond, wild flowers, gravelled areas, alpine troughs, 'secret' garden and as many trees and shrubs as a small garden can hold. Sunday 22 June (11am-4pm) Pound Cottage, Mill Lane, Partridge Green, RH13 8JU Contact: Thelma Brown, 01403 710218 One of the prettiest gardens in the Partridge Green Open Garden event. Come and see this beautiful one acre garden and look out for the chickens! Refreshments available. (Refreshments, dogs.) Fee: free, donation welcome. Visit the crow’s nest viewing platform slung between two oak trees to see views of the garden and Sussex countryside. Enjoy the uninterrupted views to the South Downs and Chanctonbury Ring over the ha-ha fence. The many different plots at this garden include colourful long borders, Japanese-style gardens, greenhouse and vegetable garden. (Refreshments, dogs, disabled.) Fee: £4, children free. Sunday 13 July (2pm-5pm) Ridge House, East Street, Turners Hill, RH10 4PU Contact: Mr and Mrs Daniels 01342 715344 On arrival the breath taking views of the Ashdown Forest and the Sussex Downs will be revealed. You mustn't miss the vegetable garden with the pear and apple orchard as well as the large fig tree and productive crab-apple tree too. Refreshments will be served while you enjoy the tranquillity of Ridge House garden. (Dogs, refreshment, parking, disabled.) Fee: £3.50 entrance, children free. Friday 18 July and 19 July (2pm-5pm) Caxton Manor, Wall Hill, Forest Row, RH18 5EG Contact: Adele Speelman, 01342 823102 Caxton Manor is a delightful five acre Japanese-inspired garden, planted with mature rhododendrons, azaleas and acers. The formal gardens feature 20 interlinking pools and cascades and an impressive water garden known as 'The White Sea'. Take in some of the finest views of the South Downs and Chanctonbury Ring. Sunday 20 July (1pm-5pm) Copthorne Open Gardens Contact: Lane Peile, 01342 712738 Come and explore the gardens of Copthorne at this unique open garden afternoon. Gardens of all shapes and sizes will be opened to the public to discover their hidden secrets. Tickets with maps available from outside the village hall at 12.30pm on the day. (Refreshments.) Fee: £5 to include all gardens. August Sunday 10 August (11am-5pm) The Villa, Godstone Hill, Godstone, Surrey.
