'Tea and Talk' hosts Jenny Merritt (left) and Kerry Carter. Older people in Caterham living by themselves will be able to get out more thanks to a new service from Age UK Surrey in partnership with Tandridge District Council and funding from Surrey County Council Adult Social Services. The first 'Tea and Talk' event will be hosted at the Douglas Brunton Centre in Chaldon Road, Caterham and will be hosted by Jenny Merritt and Kerry Carter from Age UK Surrey who will greet guests and offer a variety of activities such as a knitting group, reminiscence boxes, a workshop on wired floral displays as well as the simple opportunity to relax and chat. There will also be a raffle for those who are feeling lucky! Complimentary refreshments will be provided and free transport is available for those who cannot get there themselves. Kerry from Age UK Surrey is based in Caterham. She said: “We are looking forward to getting together with many older people from the community to enjoy a chat, a few activities and a cup of tea; anyone feeling a bit unsure can always give us a ring first.” Olga Salenius, Community Support Manager at Tandridge District Council said: “I am delighted that we have been able to work closely with Age UK Surrey to introduce this new service to Tandridge; Surrey County Council’s funding has enabled us to use local facilities to help support our older residents. Tea & Talk is just one of many projects we are helping to develop across the District with Surrey’s support.” The ‘Tea & Talk’ initiative is a part of a wider project called Making Connections. Another part of this service is designed for people who want to get out and about and find new interests to join but don’t want to go alone. Trusted volunteers will arrange a visit, find out what the person enjoys, or make a few suggestions, and then arrange to accompany them for a while. The official launch will be on Tuesday 8th April at the Douglas Brunton Centre, Park Road, Caterham from 1-3pm and everyone will be welcome. To find out more please call Jenny or Kerry on: 01883 343095.
