The launch of the P&G Surrey Youth Games 2014, the largest youth sports event in Surrey, took place at the Surrey Sports Park, on Monday 31st March. Those in attendance to celebrate the launch included: sponsors Proctor and Gamble and the Surrey Sports Park, organisers Active Surrey, the Surrey High Sheriff Elect Peter Lee and mayors from each local borough and district. Past competitors Morgan Brownlow (Staines, Spelthorne), Gabriella Clark (Reigate & Banstead) and James Peters (Epsom, Epsom & Ewell) took to the stage to tell attendees about the different the P&G Surrey Youth Games had made to their lives. Morgan said: “Through competing, coaching and volunteering at the Surrey Youth Games I have been introduced to squash which I really enjoy and keep playing. I was offered a bursary to train as a coach this year so I can take even more of a role coaching the juniors this year and hopefully inspiring them to make the most of opportunities like the P&G Surrey Youth Games. By the way, I can now beat both my mum and dad at squash!” The P&G Surrey Youth Games is a multi-sports competition, spread over two days, in which all eleven districts and boroughs in Surrey enter teams into fifteen different sporting events. There are events for all ages, including events for young people with disabilities. Young people attend local coaching sessions in the two months prior to the Games. For many of the players selected the event is their first experience of countywide competition. Paul Blanchard, CEO of sponsor Surrey Sports Park said: “It’s great to be hosting such an inspiring event once again in 2014. Hearing from past competitors today and their successes after the Games just shows what an impact this event makes on youth sport in Surrey.” Since 1997 The P&G Surrey Youth Games have continued to grow and develop, especially over the past 6 years with the much-valued support of Procter & Gamble. This year’s event will take place on Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd June, at the Surrey Sports Park. For more information about the events and training taking place, visit www.activesurrey.com. |
