Following the delivery of the first phase of works to construct three temporary water storage areas in Woldingham and remove the immediate local flooding risk, Surrey Highways and its partners will deliver the remaining major works programme in six key phases: Phase One: Monday 7th April Woldingham Road will be partially re-opened from Wapses Lodge roundabout to Halliloo Valley Road under speed restriction and temporary traffic lights. To protect the workforce a speed restriction of 30 MPH will be maintained and temporary traffic lights will allow traffic to pass as single carriageway under the Rail Viaduct. During this phase Surrey Highways will upgrade drainage piping and install additional capacity to provide a long term solution to Woldingham Road flooding. Phase Two: 27th to 30th May Woldingham Road will be closed for 3 days to enable full resurfacing and removal of the temporary storage area. During this period Surrey Highways will support the reinstatement of damaged areas in the private roads of Stuart Road and the Woldingham School access road. These dates are flexible and Surrey Highways will work with key stakeholders to confirm if proposed dates are the optimum days that would have the least possible community impact. Surrey Highways have explored all alternative options which would not involve further road closure. Unfortunately the existing water levels (below the carriageway) prevent any effective resurfacing before late May. Phase Three: Sat 31st May Woldingham Road will be fully re-opened from Wapses Lodge roundabout to Halliloo Valley Road. All traffic restrictions will be removed. Phase Four: June 2014 A22 Wapses Lodge roundabout and all approaches will be completely resurfaced. This will involve 2-3 days of night closures. Specific closure dates and a diversion route will be confirmed in April 2014. Phase Five: June – Oct 2014 A22 & Whyteleafe Drainage Improvement Works. Surrey Highways will invest an additional £150,000 to upgrade local drainage system. This will provide new piping and capacity to mitigate future flooding incidents in the Whyteleafe area. Phase Six: Oct 2014 Onwards Subject to the award of an external £1m of grant funding, Surrey Highways and the London Borough of Croydon will construct additional storage capacity and further drainage enhancement to deliver increased local resilience. A joint bid has been submitted to Central Government and will be confirmed in due course.
