Bowled over by success. That's the Surrey Police Cricket Team who became national champions last week after clinching the final of the Police Plate competition against West Mercia Police. Delayed from last season following the successful semi-final against North Wales, the final took place at Normandy Cricket Club on 12 May and proved a close fought, exciting match. Surrey batted first and set their opponents a target of 193 spurred on by Ben Ungaretti's 61 and Andy McPherson's 45. West Mercia began extremely well with former Worcestershire and Gloucestershire all rounder Iain Mclaren blasting a quick fire 72 but fine spells of bowling from Jon Youngs and Dan Chant slowed the batsmen as wickets fell at regular intervals, shifting the momentum to the Surrey team which eventually bowled out the opposition for 164. Captain PC Richard Spink commented after the match: "This is the first time the team have won silverware in the national competition so this is a significant achievement by all concerned."
The cricket team also did their new sponsors proud after agreeing a new shirt sponsorship deal with Woking-based PSG Energy at the start of the season.
