A special celebration took place at Longmead House care home in Buxton Lane, Caterham-on-the-Hill recently, when one of its residents celebrated her 100th birthday on Saturday 10th April.
In addition to family members and friends, amongst the guests were those Joyce had cared for over the years as a nanny.
Joyce began training as a nanny when she was 16, then had several short-term jobs before starting a job in 1938 caring for a little boy. After eight years Joyce left to look after her mother who was ill. When her mother recovered Joyce took up full-time employment with another family and cared for a little brother and sister. Once the children had grown up and left home, Joyce stayed on to help at the house, and eventually became nanny to the children's children!
Joyce's great-nephew, Nick Peckitt, said: "It was a lovely day. Joyce's younger sister Eunice, who is 95 shared the pleasure of seeing everyone. Joyce is remarkable - she even had a hip replacement last year at the age of 99!"
