On Friday 9th July, just after 10.30am the Shopwatch radio system was put into action when a member of the public spotted a man leaving Boots in Church walk, Caterham concealing electric toothbrushes and a grooming kit, worth £249. The radio alert from Boots allowed local officers from the Tandridge Safer Neighbourhood Team to respond quickly. A 52 year old man was later arrested on suspicion of theft. Sergeant Dave Coomber said: “This incident yet again reinforces how effective the Shopwatch radio scheme is in Caterham. The quick thinking member of public and actions of staff at the store ensured our officers were able to locate and arrest a suspect. The Shopwatch radio is monitored by the Safer Neighbourhood Team enabling officers to mobilise rapidly and take action. I would encourage anyone who was in Church Walk, Caterham, last Friday morning who may have information in connection with this theft to come forward. Surrey Police is working hard to tackle retail theft but we need your help to ensure shoplifters are brought to justice.” This incident acts as a warning to any would-be thieves thinking of targeting Caterham’s retailers. The radio system is registered with more than 20 shops in Caterham and allows stores to exchange information, alert others to suspicious behaviour and report crimes. Anyone with information is urged to contact Surrey Police on 0845 125 2222 quoting reference TD/10/3274 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111. |
