On Thursday 8th July shoppers in Tesco's car park in Caterham were educated about the risks of being distracted whilst driving by members of the Godstone Fire Service and P.C. Moira Cocks. Thie event was part of two year-long campaigns funded by Surrey County Council called 'Drive SMART', run by Surrey Police and "Driven to Distraction", run by Surrey Fire Service. The event included displays of fire engines and equipment, with talks and tips on how drivers can avoid distractions whilst driving. Tim Barnes of Godstone Fire Station said: "Since the Driven to Distraction campaign started we have noticed an increase in the number of traffic accidents. There are now more distractions that drivers need to be aware of such as mobile phones and iPods. Therefore it is important for people to do things such as planning the route, finding things for children to do and using hands free phones." For any further information on the Drive SMART programme or if you would like to register to become a volunteer, please contact PC Moira Cocks at Surrey Police on 0845 125 2222. www.drivesmartsurrey.org.uk. |
