Splash of colour at Spring Show
Published: Friday, 29 April 2016 08:46

On 23 April, Caterham & District Horticultural Society brought a splash of colour to Caterham. The Society’s Spring Show took place at Hillcroft Primary School. Hopeful local gardeners entered 85 entries in 49 categories.

Mrs Jean Burns-Thomas won three top accolades for her cut flowers and floral arrangements. This included the Spring Cup for ‘best in show’ for her daffodils and narcissi. Winner Tabitha Wren collected both a cup and a shield for her entries.

Show Secretary Robert Kelly ran the show. He said: ‘Despite the warm start to the year, with daffodils out in December, we still managed to create an excellent display. It was a real credit to Caterham’s gardeners’.

Society Chairman, Debbie Fox said:'This year we added five classes of tulip to the show schedule. This resulted in a glorious colourful display.’

Prize-winners:

1) The Spring Cup for the best exhibit (horticultural classes) in show – Mrs Jean Burns-Thomas.

2) The Rudd Cup for the winner of three vases, five stems in each, of distinct varieties of daffodils or narcissi – Mrs Jean Burns-Thomas.

3) The Johnston Cup for the best exhibit in the floral arrangement classes – Mrs Jean Burns-Thomas.

4) Woolwich Building Society Shield, for a display of flowers and/or handicrafts with a theme of St. George, by a school class or youth organisation – 1st prize 9th Caterham Guides.

5) Woolwich Building Society Cup for the best in children's classes - Tabitha Wren.

6) Tesco ‘Farm to Fork’ Cup awarded to Elizabeth Sharp from 4th Caterham Brownies for her dragon. It was one of 28 entries made from vegetables and fruit.
