Around 6,000 people packed their brollies and macs and got along to the Kenley Air Day last Saturday, 14th August despite the gloomy weather forecast. The organisers were delighted with the attendance, praising the British Bulldog spirit of the crowd for not allowing the weather to ruin the event that had been two years in the planning. The low cloud prevented the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight featuring a Hurricane, Lancaster and Spitfire from attending, but there was still plenty going on in the air to entertain everyone including an impressive display of aerobatics by a Pitts Special S-2C bi-plane and a mock combat between two replica WWI aircraft - a German Junkers CL1 and for the allies, a royal Aircraft Factory SE5A. By the end of the day, blue sky was emerging through the cloud, providing the backdrop for the impressive Brietling Wing Walkers, whose 20 minute display provided a spectular finale to the event. At the end of their display the team landed on the airfield, giving the crowd the opportunity to meet the pilots, Martyn Carrington and David Barrell and the wing-walking girls, Danielle Hughes and Stella Guilding, who posed for photos and signed autographs. The Croydon Airport Model Flying Club were also in attendance, controlling six model aircraft skillfully in a superb display that demonstrated their fine construction and manoeverability. There was also plenty to see on the ground including a display of static aircraft providing a variety of photo opportunities for the enthusiasts amongst the crowd. The MG Car Pageant attracted much attention, and a great deal of admiration from fans of classic cars. Amongst the many stalls was the Caterham Rotary Club's Pimms tent that offered welcome shelter during the sporadic downpours. Mike Street, Chairman of the Kenley Air Day 2010 organising committee, said: "I am really pleased so many people have braved the weather to come today. I have been asked if there will be more Kenley Air Days in the future and I very much hope that there will be. Kenley has so much heritage associated with it and we must always treasure that heritage. Some people have suggested we expand the event to something more like the Biggin Hill Air Fair, but I think it should remain a small, local event - a special event for our community." |
